Computer clean-up fees begin spring semester

4:29 p.m., Dec. 17, 2004--Beginning spring semester, students will be charged for examination and clean-up services performed on computers contaminated with viruses, spyware and other software that poses risks to users of the UD electronic network.

Recommended guidelines, including user responsibilities are available at [www.udel.edu/ecce/guidelines.htm]. Information about UD’s Code of the Web also is available at [www.udel.edu/codeoftheweb/code2code.html].

Charges will be $70 for an initial examination and clean-up service and $100 for any repeat service that includes cleaning student computers of viruses, spyware, P2P (peer-to-peer file-sharing management programs) and other software that puts students at risk of infecting the UD electronic community, being subject to information and identity theft and prosecution for violation of copyright laws.

Payment options for such services are being finalized. Students will be notified of these charges by e-mail before and after their return to campus for spring semester. Payment will be required before examination and computer clean-up services at the Harrington and Smith Hall computer sites.

The new policy is designed to encourage students to adopt responsible computing practices and to prevent the loss of network access and computer use while their computers are being repaired.

Informational Technologies also plans to enhance its efforts to make students aware of their responsibility as members of the UD electronic community. Information will be posted online designed to heighten student awareness about available antivirus software and other resources designed to help avoid incurring clean-up charges.
