Dec. 6 service project assists at-risk teens

3:29 p.m., Dec. 1, 2003--Generosity is a hallmark of the holidays, and the sisters of UD’s Omicron Chapter of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi are already in the spirit.

Building on their long-term outreach efforts with residents of the Bayard House, a Wilmington facility that serves pregnant, at-risk teens, members of the sorority will sponsor a baby shower in the common room of the facility at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, and members of the UD community can get involved by donating items.

The afternoon party, which will include games and activities, festive trays of food and gifts for the expectant mothers, was organized entirely by the five members of Lambda Pi Chi. Sorority dues helped fund decorations, refreshments and gifts.

Gifts and donations for the mothers-to-be also are being collected from drop-off boxes at Trabant University Center, Perkins Student Center and Christiana Commons residence halls, as well as from individual offices and residence halls across campus. Suggested donation items include diapers, toys, bottles and basic nursery supplies.

According to Lambda Pi Chi sister and chief shower organizer Simone Delerme, the Lambda Pi Chi partnership with Bayard House residents is a long-term, ongoing program that helps the residents prepare for their futures. Past outreach programs have included workshops in resume writing and financial aid application. Other life-skills workshops are on the horizon, and an ongoing goal is to sponsor at least one baby shower a semester.

The Omicron Chapter of Latinas Promoviendo Comunidad/Lambda Pi Chi was founded in the fall of 2001. Originally established at Cornell University, the nationally recognized sorority strives to increase awareness of Latino and Hispanic-American cultures, mores and traditions. Activities sponsored by the sorority at UD include food and music events and political seminars.

For more information or to make a contribution to the Dec. 6 shower, contact Delerme at 507-7906.
