African-American Students of Distinction honored

4:08 p.m., May 20, 2004--The achievements of more than 200 African-American Students of Distinction were celebrated May 8 by their families at ceremonies hosted by UD President David P. Roselle.

“To the families of the students being recognized today, I extend a personal welcome,” Roselle told those gathered in Clayton Hall. “It is with your support that they have succeeded in their academic careers. I know that during the course of the afternoon, your students will take the time to thank you and acknowledge that support.”

The ceremony honored 203 students who had grade point averages of 3.0 or higher during the spring and fall semesters.

Roselle also congratulated the students on getting the best of their UD education, while sharing some positive news about the Class of 2008, which will be arriving as freshmen this fall.

“The freshmen class will have the largest acceptance of students of color in our history, more than double the number just five years ago,” Roselle said. “Those admitted students of color have an average high school GPA of 3.3, and we expect that they will excel here as they have in high school.”

Joining Roselle in recognizing the African-American students of distinction were Cynthia Primo Martin, member of the UD Board of Trustees, and Judith Y. Gibson, assistant vice president for affirmative action and multicultural programs.

The ceremony followed the conferral of an honorary degree of doctor of humane letters upon Wilmington artist Edward L. Loper Sr.
