Discovery Days a hit with prospective students and guests

3:00 p.m., July 30, 2003--In what has become a summer tradition, the University of Delaware sets aside a series of days in July to welcome prospective students and their families to its Newark campus. During Delaware Discovery Days 2003, which took place on July 12, 19, 25 and 26, guests were given the opportunity to sample the academic and architectural richness that makes student life at UD a special experience.

According to Faye Duffy, senior associate director in enrollment services, who coordinates all on-campus programs for admissions, more than 7,600 visitors, including 2,672 students from several states, participated in this year’s Discovery Days activities.

“The most common states represented were Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New York, with guests coming in from New England and as far away as Texas, Florida and North Carolina,” Duffy said. “The most common comments included remarks about how well the program was organized, how friendly and informative UD staff members were, and thanks for the free water bottles and ice cream.”

Discovery Days begin and end at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center, in the Dave Nelson Athletic
Complex on UD’s south campus. Programs included a 9-11:30 a.m. information fair, where 100 UD faculty and staff representing more than 75 academic and service units, answered questions about their respective departments. After the information fair, guests were treated to lunch and free ice cream, as well as sessions on housing, honors, admissions and financial aid, plus tours of residence and dining halls.

Prospective students and their families who were unable to attend the July Discovery Days can still visit the UD campus this fall during Blue and Golden Saturdays. The 9 a.m.-3 p.m. sessions, scheduled for Oct. 11, 25 and Nov. 8, will include information about the selective admission process and early decision application, scholarships and financial aid and an exploration of academic disciplines with UD faculty and students.

Saturday sessions also will include campus walking tours led by student Blue Hen Ambassadors, a fall fair of UD activities and student services, an honors program presentation and visits to one or more of 65 residence halls on campus.

For more information, call the Admissions office at (302) 831-8123, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., weekdays. Online reservations will be available in September.
