Prof. Chou recognized for contributions to engineering literature

11:15 a.m., Nov. 20, 2002--Tsu-Wei Chou, P.S. du Pont Chair of Engineering, has been selected for the Worcester-Reed Warner Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), which will be awarded during the 2002 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in New Orleans, Nov. 17-22.

Tsu-Wei Chou, chairperson of the Department of Mechanical Engineering

The medal is given to individuals who add to the permanent literature of engineering. Chou, who is chairperson of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the literature in analytical modeling, processing science and damage mechanics of fiber composite materials. He is the author of more than 250 archival journal papers and book chapters, as well as several books on composite materials.

In citing Chou for his accomplishments, ASME wrote, “Chou’s pioneering research in structural and functional composites perhaps best demonstrates his vision of and approach to composites. He has elucidated the integration of fiber perform manufacturing, composites processing, characterization and analysis/modeling.”

Chou is a fellow of ASME, ASM International, the American Society for Composites and the American Ceramic Society and is an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Among his honors, he received ASME’s Charles Russ Richards Memorial Award and the Distinguished Research Award of the American Society of Composites. He also has been recognized as highly cited researcher in materials science by the Institute of Scientific Information. In 2001, he received the University’s Francis Alison Award as an outstanding faculty member.

Chou’s research involves materials science and applied mechanics, including the macrostructure of polymer, metal and ceramic materials. Most recently his research focuses on nano-composites.

A member of the UD faculty since 1969, he’s a founding member of UD’s Center for Composite Materials.
