Julie Wilgen named UT Alumna of the Year

4:30 p.m., April 2, 2003--Julie Mapes Wilgen, assistant professor of individual and family studies, has been named Alumna of the Year 2002 in Human Ecology by the Texas Exes of the Human Ecology Department at the University of Texas at Austin.

Each year the Texas Exes in Human Ecology award five different awards to outstanding alumni in human ecology. Wilgen was chosen to receive the Alumna of the Year award, which honors alumni for their significant and meritorious service in the field of human ecology. Wilgen was selected for her extraordinary involvement in school organizations, community activities and professional organizations.

She was cited specifically for her work as a human sexuality researcher, educator and lecturer. Her efforts in mentoring undergraduate students also were acknowledged.

Besides teaching human sexuality, life span development and family relations, Wilgen serves on the board of directors for Planned Parenthood of Delaware, the American Cancer Society and the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality.

A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Wilgen received her doctorate from Texas Tech University in 1979. She came to UD from Georgia Southern University in 1989 and was given a secondary appointment to UD’s women’s studies department in 1999.

In 2000, she received UD’s Award for Excellence in Academic Advising and her name has been added to the bricks in Mentors’ Circle.

The Texas Exes in Human Ecology will honor Wilgen on April 20.
