UD grad programs take honors in 'U.S. News' guide

12:05 a.m., April 4, 2003--The University of Delaware’s graduate program in chemical engineering, its College of Engineering and School of Education are among the best in the nation, according to the new edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” a newsstand book to be published April 7 by U.S. News & World Report.

The next issue of U.S. News, also available April 7, will contain many of the rankings.

UD’s graduate chemical engineering program was ranked ninth in the nation, and the College of Engineering was rated 44th for its graduate program, tying with Dartmouth College and the University of Rochester.

The School of Education was ranked 47th, tying with the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. UD also is listed in a chart on teacher preparation programs at top education schools.

For the rankings of graduate programs in the College of Engineering and the School of Education, criteria included measures of the qualities that students and faculty bring to the educational experience, as well as measures of graduates’ achievements that can be credited to their educational experience.

“Over the years, several of UD’s graduate programs have placed well in these rankings, and I am pleased that we continue to win such recognition,” Provost Dan Rich said. “Such rankings are one more indication of the increased national recognition of the quality of teaching and research at the University of Delaware.”

U.S. News, which has been publishing graduate school rankings since 1994, does not rank all disciplines every year. The magazine’s rankings of undergraduate programs are published in the fall.
