Jeremy Nathans, professor of molecular biology and genetics at Johns Hopkins University and son of UD alumnus and Nobel Laureate Daniel Nathans, speaks to students attending the Summer Undergraduate Research Enrichment Program Symposium Aug. 8. In addition to the lecture, eight students gave talks on their research and 64 presented posters. The symposium, originally for Howard Hughes Medical Institute scholars, has grown to include students funded by a variety of other sources. This year, only 29 of the 72 who attend enrichment activities were HHMI scholars. The symposium was the enrichment program finale and included undergraduate research students in engineering, arts and sciences, agriculture, and health and nursing sciences, as well as the Delaware Biotechnology Institute. Daniel Nathans, who died in 1999, earned his bachelor’s degree at UD in 1950. Known as the father of modern biotechnology, he received the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1978.
