Women's intercollegiate athletics at UD has had a shorter, but no less important, history. From the opening of the Women's College of Delaware in 1914 through the 1960s, women's athletics at Delaware focused on physical fitness and intramural sports. As social expectations, faculty opinions and University practices changed, Delaware introduced intercollegiate women's sports in 1969 with the fielding of a women's basketball team. Women's field hockey and swimming teams quickly followed. Women's teams at the University of Delaware have gone on to win a number of regional and conference titles, such as the NAC Championship in Volleyball in 1992.
