Electronic Media Destruction
In addition to paper records destruction, University Archives and Records Management offers destruction services for all standard forms of electronic, optical, and magnetic media, including hard drives. This service is available to all University faculty and staff, but it is to be used solely for the destruction of University resources (not for personal use). Destruction certification can be provided upon request. Electronic, optical, and magnetic media are destroyed completely and cannot be reused.

Cost for destruction of all media except for hard drives is not charged back to requesting units.

Cost for destruction of hard drives is charged back to requesting units. The price is $20 per drive. Please contact Archives for further details regarding the manner in which destruction is performed. Advance notice of delivery of hard drives is required, and drives should be delivered in person by a representative of the requesting unit. A document containing an exact count of the drives to be destroyed, a listing of all serial numbers of the drives to be destroyed, the name of the originating unit, and a purpose code for payment of associated fees must accompany delivery of the drives.

All electronic media, including hard drives, must be removed from computer workstations or devices prior to delivery to the Archives. Hardware cannot and will not be accepted.

Some aspects to keep in mind when using this service are as follows:

  • The media are disintegrated in their entirety. They cannot be reused.
  • Media should be delivered in person to the Archives. Advance notice of delivery should be given to any Archives staff member (x2750 or ud-archives@udel.edu).
  • Media, including hard drives, must be removed from computers prior to delivery to the Archives. The Archives cannot and will not accept computer hardware.
