ON THE GREEN | The Early Learning Center at UD has been recognized by Michele Obama's "Let's Move!" initiative as a top early education program to improve children's activity levels and address the problem of childhood obesity.

Serving some 300 children from birth through age 5 in Newark and Wilmington, Del., the center was cited for its creative strategies in engaging families, overcoming challenges to get children moving and encouraging healthy eating in the early care and education setting.

The center has initiated a number of multidisciplinary programs from across the University to develop healthy habits.

These include "MyPlate" activities for preschool children, in which community nursing students provide learning experiences about healthy eating, which are then reinforced during family-style breakfasts and lunches. Also, faculty from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources work with teachers and children to create vegetable gardens, and exercise science and physical therapy students create lessons designed to increase physical activity.
