Lecturer to discuss ethnic forms of rhetoric, African American English

8:13 a.m., Oct. 22, 2015--Raymond Keith Gilyard, the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English and African American Studies at Penn State University, will give a lecture about cultural and ethnic forms of rhetoric from 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, in Room 111 Memorial Hall on the University of Delaware’s Newark campus.

The lecture, titled “The Rhetoric of Translingualism,” is presented by the Department of English and is free and open to the public.

Advocating African American English as a legitimate discourse, Gilyard is a prominent voice in the movement to recognize ethic and cultural discourses other than Standard English as valid. 

He teaches and conducts research in the fields of rhetoric, composition, literacy studies, sociolinguistics and African American literature. His primary interest lies in identifying intersections of African American English and composition practices. 

Gilyard is the author of Wing of Memory and three other books of poetry, as well as five scholarly books, including True to the Language Game: African American Discourse, Cultural Politics, and Pedagogy, and numerous articles. As a literary scholar, his interests have been in the interplay between African American literature and rhetorical criticism and in bio-critical work.
