GIS Day is supported globally by GIS company Esri and celebrates the technology that GIS users apply daily to solve real-world problems. The goal of GIS Day is to teach people about geography and the uses of GIS.

Smith recently joined IT Research Computing as a GIS consultant. She has been working with GIS for over 13 years, most recently as a senior geospatial engineer for Booz Allen Hamilton, National Guard Bureau.

Smith will demonstrate the applications of GIS software and ways GIS is being used at UD. The focus of her demonstrations will be creating models with ArcGIS Desktop and creating a basic map in ArcGIS.

Additionally, Smith will discuss the GIS services IT provides, such as GIS software troubleshooting, programmatic software solutions, free online GIS training, and grant support. This demonstration is geared toward beginner and intermediate GIS users. Advanced uses are welcome to join individual or circle discussions on the topic of their interest.

Stevenson will demonstrate how researchers can get started using PolicyMap. Researchers can connect and learn more about this mapping and database/visualization software through the University Library database page.

Following his demonstration Stevenson will discuss GIS services that the library offers, including consultations on finding printed and digital maps, finding authoritative data, and assisting users with the output of maps in the Student Multimedia Design Center.

This event is registered on Esri’s GIS Day website
