11:22 a.m., Nov. 30, 2015--The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Delaware hosted the inaugural Mid-Atlantic BME Grad Fair on Nov. 14 in the Harker Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory.

The event, which included graduate program exhibits and undergraduate research posters, was held to give prospective BME graduate students access to information and foster networking with programs in the region.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Attendees included 36 undergraduate students from 11 schools: Bucknell University, City College of New York, Drexel University, Johns Hopkins University, Lehigh University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rowan University, Rutgers University, Temple University, University of Delaware and University of Maryland College Park.  All of these schools that have graduate BME programs set up exhibits.

Six students received poster session awards, which were voted on by attendees:

  • Best Science Poster Session 1: Sarah Libring, Rutgers University
  • Best Presentation Session 1: Kevin Pineault, University of Maryland College Park
  • Best Science Poster Session 2: Peter Sariano, University of Delaware
  • Best Presentation Poster Session 2: Asena Abay, Bucknell University
  • Best Overall Poster Runner Up: Lidya Abune, Bucknell University
  • Best Overall Poster Award: Erica Comber, University of Delaware

The event was very well received by department representatives as well as prospective students. Department representatives said they valued the opportunity to meet with students who are really interested in research and graduate school, and they liked the unstructured atmosphere and chance to mingle. Attendees commented that they enjoyed connecting with other BME students and learning about their research.

“There is a very strong cohort of BME departments in the Mid-Atlantic region, so we were very pleased to host the first grad fair in the region for this rapidly growing and very popular field,” said department chair Dawn Elliott. “It was a great opportunity to showcase our programs while also enabling our students to network and share their research with others.”
