April 4-10: Public Health Week
College of Health Sciences opens its doors for National Public Health Week
8:25 a.m., March 22, 2016--To celebrate National Public Health Week, the University of Delaware College of Health Sciences has seven events planned for the week of April 4.
The week highlights the contributions of public health, educating policymakers, practitioners and the general public about key health issues of our time.

Held at the University’s Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus Health Sciences Complex, the healthy happenings are open to the public. Registration is requested.
Activities are as follows:
• Monday, April 4 – Family Fun Night. To mark Family Fun Night, the facility will have kid-friendly activities throughout the building, including a photo scavenger hunt. Several UD organizations including the Public Health Club, Health Behavior Science Club and the Assistive Medical Technologies Club – will show children the inner workings of the health sciences through interactive, hands-on activities. Area families are welcome. Activities and food will be geared toward families with children ages 12 and under. The event is open from 5 to 7 p.m.
• Tuesday, April 5 – Distinguished Scholar Lecture Series with a focus on obesity and diabetes. The yearlong College of Health Sciences Distinguished Scholar Lecture Series will continue at 4 p.m. Stella Volpe, professor and chair of nutrition sciences at Drexel University, will discuss prevention of obesity and diabetes. Her three distinct research areas involving these epidemics include: mineral metabolism, exercise and diet trials, and hanging the environment to encourage healthier eating and increased physical activity
• Wednesday, April 6 – First Step Grand Challenge. The First Step Grand Challenge has been a year in the making. Over of the course of the 2015-16 academic year, nearly 100 UD undergraduates from across all seven colleges have developed innovative solutions to health, societal and environmental issues, large and small. Now, each of the 23 teams will be on the clock, presenting their entrepreneurial ideas to a panel of judges including academics, private industry professionals and community leaders. Funding will be on the line to turn ideas into realities. Doors open at 6 p.m. with a poster session preceding spotlight presentations and an awards ceremony.
• Thursday, April 7 – Biomechanics Day. Being held from 8 to 11 a.m., Maryland and Delaware high school students will join Elisa Arch and Jeremy Crenshaw along with the UD biomechanics team for an interactive experience in the STAR Health Sciences Complex. The students will spend time in the laboratories for demonstrations from faculty and graduate students.
• Thursday, April 7 – Hayes Symposium with a focus on Parkinson’s disease. This year’s Evelyn Hayes Innovations in Healthcare Symposium discusses “Parkinson’s Disease: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.” Held from 12:30 to 4 p.m., presenters will include Daniel Kremens, assistant professor and co-director of the movement disorders program at Thomas Jefferson University, and UD’s Healthcare Theatre Program, a unique interdisciplinary education program that helps health care professionals develop communication skills through interactive scenarios presented by theatre students. The targeted audience is patients, families, caregivers, and students, although all are welcome.
• Friday, April 8 – Erin Brockovich movie viewing and environmental health discussion. The community is invited alongside UD employees and students for a lecture, the movie Erin Brockovich, and a succeeding discussion on environmental health. The event is hosted by the Public Health Club. Curtain opens at 6 p.m.
• Saturday, April 9 – Scrub Run 5K. The inaugural Scrub Run 5K will be held in Newark. Starting bright and early at 8 a.m., the race course starts on UD’s Laird Campus and heads out onto Creek Road. No need to be a health care professional to participate, however those who are health care professionals are encouraged to wear their scrubs. After the race, stick around for refreshments and an awards ceremony. The run is sponsored by UD’s School of Nursing and the Delaware Academy of Medicine as well as the Delaware Public Health Association on behalf of the Immunization Coalition of Delaware.
