UD study abroad students in Istanbul safe following Tuesday blast

2:19 p.m., Jan. 12, 2016--Twelve University of Delaware study abroad students and their faculty director are safe in Istanbul, Turkey, following the terrorist bombing near Sultanahmet Square on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

At least 10 people were killed and another 15 wounded in the blast, according to reports.

Fulbright awards

Three University of Delaware students and an alumna have received word this spring that they will travel abroad as part of the newest class of Fulbright Student Program award winners.

Peace Corps plans

Two University of Delaware students, John McCarron and Bridgette Spritz, have been selected as Peace Corps volunteers and will serve in Ghana and Rwanda.

UD’s Institute for Global Studies is monitoring information from both the State Department and International SOS, a leading medical and travel security assistance company.

The UD group, led by Brad Glass, assistant professor in the School of Education, is in the midst of a three-week program in Turkey and was far from the blast zone. 

All of the students have been in touch with their families since the incident.

The group is scheduled to return to the United States on Jan. 24.
