TEXT SIZE

2:54 p.m., Feb. 15, 2016--A new initiative in a longstanding partnership between the University of Delaware and the University of Warsaw will enable selected UD graduate students to attend a Statistical Teaching and Analytics Research Training (START) workshop in Poland this summer.

Applications are now being accepted for the workshop, which will be held from July 1-10 and focus on collaborative learning, scholarship and student mentoring and engagement. The START program will cover all travel and lodging expenses for student participants and provide them a small stipend.

Global Stories

Fulbright awards

Three University of Delaware students and an alumna have received word this spring that they will travel abroad as part of the newest class of Fulbright Student Program award winners.

Peace Corps plans

Two University of Delaware students, John McCarron and Bridgette Spritz, have been selected as Peace Corps volunteers and will serve in Ghana and Rwanda.

During the workshop, UD graduate students will work together with University of Warsaw graduate students on an applied research project, attend presentations by faculty and other researchers, meet one-on-one with faculty mentors and participate in a range of social activities in Warsaw.

The START program aims to provide a unique global experience, bridge societal divides and promote global citizenry and diversity. The summer workshop, specifically, will:

  • Promote intellectual and social diversity, global learning and scholarly collaboration;
  • Emphasize scholarly, data-driven exploration of pressing social and behavioral issues;
  • Offer applied instruction in project-directed data management and statistical analyses; and
  • Foster faculty and peer mentoring that encourages academic confidence and success.

Eligibility criteria

Eligible graduate students must be enrolled full time, have successfully completed at least one graduate research methods and/or statistics course at UD, be able to travel internationally and have an expressed interest in using data and statistics to study social and behavioral issue.

Preference will be given to students within the first few years of their program, with limited experiences abroad and/or in need of additional mentoring in the use of data and statistics. Students from historically underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Application process

Applicants can complete the online application here. The application also requires a single PDF containing a cover letter discussing how the applicant would benefit from participation in the START workshop in Warsaw, a recent CV and an unofficial transcript.

In addition, applicants must have a faculty mentor email a letter of support directly to Jade Grant at jjgrant@udel.edu. A review of the complete applications will begin March 15, and all applicants will be notified of the decision by March 30.

For questions about START, email Agnes Ly, director of learning, at aly@udel.edu.
