University announces hours, closings for winter holiday break

12:44 p.m., Dec. 16, 2015--The winter holiday break at the University of Delaware begins for students, who will have the last of their final exams on Saturday, Dec. 19, when residence halls close at 10 p.m. that evening.

Classes will resume Monday, Jan. 4, with the beginning of Winter Session.

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

University offices will close from Thursday, Dec. 24, and will reopen Monday, Jan. 4.

Library hours

The University of Delaware Library includes the Morris Library, which is the main library, and three branch libraries, the Chemistry Library and Physics Library in Newark and the Marine Studies Library in Lewes.

The Morris Library will be open until 10 p.m., Friday, Dec. 18, and from 9 a.m.-10 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 19.

It will be closed Sunday, Dec. 20, then open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 21-23. 

The Chemistry Library, located in Brown Laboratory, and the Marine Studies Library, located on the Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes, will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday, Dec. 18; closed Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 19-20; and open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 21-23. 

The Morris Library and branch libraries will be closed from Thursday, Dec. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 3, and will reopen Monday, Jan. 4, following the University calendar.

The electronic library of the University of Delaware Library, which is available 24/7, provides access for UD faculty, students and staff to a rich array of online library resources including DELCAT Discovery, numerous databases, full-text information, electronic journals, electronic newspapers, electronic books, Research Guides, the UDSpace (Institutional Repository) and much more. A mobile-friendly version of the library web page is also available.

Athletics

The Bob Carpenter Center will host two basketball games during the break. The UD women’s basketball team will face the University of Vermont at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 22. 

The UD men’s basketball team will play James Madison University at noon, Saturday, Jan. 2. 

Bookstore

The UD Barnes and Noble Bookstore will be open from 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Thursday and Friday, Dec. 17-18; from 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 19 (including café); from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 20 (including café); from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 21-23 (café open 9 a.m.-6 p.m.); from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 24 (including café). It will be closed on Christmas Day. 

The bookstore, including café, will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 26; from noon- 6.m., Sunday, Dec. 27; from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 28-30; and from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 31. It will be closed New Years Day.

The bookstore, including café, will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 2, and from noon-6 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 3. 

Regular Winter Session hours will resume Monday, Jan. 4. 

Campus Mail Services

Campus Mail Services will offer reduced services on Wednesday, Dec. 23, announcing that:

  • There will be no scheduled afternoon pickup at white campus mailboxes that day.
  • Any campus office that will be closed should contact Campus Mail to hold delivery.
  • Those who require a large pickup of mail before 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 23, should contact Campus Mail by noon.

Development Office

For the convenience of donors who wish to make contributions, the Office of University Development can be reached at 302-831-2104 and will be staffed from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29, and Thursday, Dec. 31. Gifts may also be made online at any time by visiting this website.

Ice arenas

UD Ice Arenas will hold holiday skating sessions at the Fred Rust Ice Arena from 8-10 p.m., Friday, Dec. 18; from 1-3 p.m. and 8-10 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 19; and from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 20.

The arena will be decorated for the holidays with more than 1,000 lights and the ice will be painted as a winter wonderland. There will also be special prizes and giveaways during the holiday sessions, which begin from 1-3:15 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 24.

The arena will be closed for Christmas, Friday, Dec. 25.

It will be open Saturday through Wednesday, Dec. 26-30, from 1-3:15 p.m., 4:30-6:30 p.m., and 7:30-9:30 p.m.; Thursday, Dec. 31, from 1-3:15 p.m.; and Friday, Jan. 1, from 1-4 p.m.

Family Fun weekends kick off on Sunday, Jan. 3, from 1-3 p.m., with free ice cream from UDairy Creamery to the first 200 guests.

Parking Services

Parking Services has announced that it will be closing at noon, Wednesday, Dec. 23, for the holiday break. All online services will be available.

Recreation

The Carpenter Sports Building general facility will be open from 6 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 18, and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 19. It will be closed Sunday, Dec. 20.

The Little Bob will again be open from 6 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Tuesday, Dec. 21-22, and from 6 a.m.-1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 23. 

The building will be closed Thursday, Dec. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 3. 

Lap and recreational swimming at the indoor pool has been canceled Sunday through Tuesday, Dec. 20-22. The Wednesday, Dec. 23, lap swim scheduled for 11-15 a.m.-1:15 p.m. will end at 1 p.m., and 7-9:30 p.m. lap swim has been canceled.

Residence halls, dining

Residence halls will close at 10 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 19. Residence halls will reopen for Winter Session with check-in from 2-9 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 3. The first meal in the dining halls will be dinner that day. 

UDairy Creamery

UDairy Creamery will be closed Wednesday, Dec. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 4, reopening at 9 a.m., Monday, Jan. 5.

Until Dec. 24, hours are 9 a.m.-8 p.m., weekdays, and 11 a.m.-8 p.m., weekends. 

UDairy Creamery will be at all UD and Delaware 87ers basketball games throughout the break and Winter Session.
