First Friday Roundtable will be held April 15 in 208 Gore Hall

12:56 p.m., April 4, 2016--On Friday, April 15, the First Friday Roundtable series at the University of Delaware will host a presentation titled “Motivating Students To Be Academically Honest. Should We Use TurnItIn Software or Are There Other Strategies?”

These monthly discussion sessions provide an opportunity for faculty, instructors and graduate students to examine teaching, learning and assessment practices and issues.

The roundtable will be held from 3:30-5 p.m. in 208 Gore Hall.

Presenters and panelists for this interactive session include Joe Harris, professor, English; Gail Wade, associate professor, School of Nursing; Nigel Caplan, associate professor, English Language Institute; Melissa Ianetta, associate professor, English; Meg Grotti, associate librarian, University Library; Michael Fernbacher, assistant director, Office of Student Conduct. 

The panelists, who have varied opinions on the use of plagiarism detection, will discuss their experiences using TurnItIn or the alternative strategies they develop to prevent academic dishonesty. 

After participants work in groups on a problem-based learning (PBL) problem and present their findings the panelists will address provide their feedback on following questions:

• When does a teaching moment turn into an actionable issue (plagiarism)? Have you experienced plagiarism in your classroom and what did you do?
• How do you create assignments that keep students motivated to be academically honest?
• If you use TurnItIn (or another tool), how do you incorporate it into your curriculum? 

Participants can look forward to hearing different opinions about plagiarism detecting software and alternatives for its use. Register for this roundtable.
