April issue of UD Messenger available online

8:46 a.m., April 18, 2016--The newest edition of the University of Delaware Messenger is available online. The print magazine, sent to more than 160,000 alumni, parents and friends, hit mailboxes this week.

Themed “Investing in our Students,” the issue highlights UD’s commitment to providing a stand-out University experience. Cover features include an inside look at the admissions process to recruit the incoming freshman class; a spread on UD’s entrepreneurial ecosystem; and the ripple effect strong faculty have on the student experience.

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

  • Profiles of the current Mitchell Fellows, two students whose scholarship and commitment to social justice follows in the legacy of famed Delaware civil rights leaders Littleton and Jane Mitchell.
  • Overview of student research investigating the impact of rainfall in urban environments.
  • One student’s “life-changing” internship working with children of red light district workers in India.
  • A look at UD’s Alternative Breaks programs, in which students spend their spring break volunteering for places in need.
  • The winning remarks from the Pitch: 90 competition, where students explain their research in a concise, 90-second “elevator pitch.”

  • The academic family tree of Prof. Don Sparks, who has mentored 37 doctoral students who have gone on to mentor 102 more.
