2012 Plastino Scholar Marcela Omans traveled to Bogota, Colombia, to research international adoptions at the orphanage from which she had been adopted 20 years earlier. Her trip to Colombia allowed her to study the factors that support and hinder international adoptions and to learn more about the culture of her native country.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

“Plastino Scholars are among UD’s most talented, promising and imaginative students,” said Robin Morgan, professor of biological sciences and animal and food sciences and director of the Plastino program.

The program was established in 2007 by a gift from David A. Plastino, who earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at UD in 1978, to help outstanding undergraduate students realize their dreams and pursue a passionate interest that would not be possible without financial support. Scholars have described their Plastino-supported projects as transformational in their lives and the lives of others.

Previous Plastino Scholars have participated in a wide variety of activities, including traveling across the U.S. to make a documentary exploring individuals’ political views, conducting ethnographic and historical research on the Jewish community in Buenos Aires, and working in maternal health clinics in Bangladesh.

The program is part of the College of Arts and Sciences, but students from across the University are eligible for the scholarships.

Each spring, a dinner is held for the past year's Plastino Scholars, who speak about their experiences, and to announce the new recipients.
