Professor Emerita Fleda Brown will read from her new collection

11:42 a.m., Oct. 22, 2014--Fleda Brown, professor emerita of English and former poet laureate of Delaware, will give a poetry reading at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, in Room 111 Memorial Hall on UD’s Newark campus.

The reading, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a reception in the third-floor dome of Memorial Hall.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Brown, who retired from the University in 2007 after 27 years on the faculty, will read from her eighth collection of poems, No Need of Sympathy, published by BOA Editions in 2013. Her collection of essays, written with Vermont Poet Laureate Sydney Lea, Growing Old in Poetry: Two Poets, Two Lives, also was published last year by Autumn House Books.

While at UD, Brown directed the Poets in the Schools program and, from 2001-07, she was the state’s poet laureate. 

She has published a memoir, Driving With Dvorak (University of Nebraska Press, 2010), and her work has appeared in Best American Poetry. She has won a Pushcart Prize, the Felix Pollak Prize, the Philip Levine Prize, the Great Lakes Colleges New Writer’s Award and the New Letters and the Ohio State University/The Journal awards for creative nonfiction.

She lives in Traverse City, Michigan, with her husband, Jerry Beasley, also a UD professor emeritus of English.
