Osher's 'June a la Carte' lecture series highlights music, food, gardens

1:10 p.m., May 20, 2015--The 19th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Delaware in Wilmington will be held June 8-11. Titled “June a la Carte,” each day's program will feature a special cultural or food theme. 

The program takes place 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each morning for four consecutive days at UD’s Arsht Hall, 2700 Pennsylvania Ave., Wilmington. This year’s featured presenters and topics include:

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Monday, June 8 — The Art of Food

  • Patricia Talorico, food writer and columnist, News Journal.
  • Joseph DiGregorio, executive chef, faculty member and director of education, Vita Nova Restaurant, Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, University of Delaware.
  • Food demonstrations and tastings.

Tuesday, June 9 — The Art of Music

  • A music education mini-fair and musical instrument "petting zoo” hosted by performers and faculty of the Osher Lifelong Learning music department.
  • Demonstrations, question and answer sessions, hands-on learning opportunities.

Wednesday, June 10 — Art in Gardens and Gardens in Art

  • “The Art of British Gardens,” Margaretta Frederick, chief curator, Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington.
  • “Delaware's Naturalistic Gardens,” Presented by a docent from Mt. Cuba Center, Hockessin, Delaware.
  • Tour of Goodstay Gardens, the historic Tudor-style garden located on the grounds of the University of Delaware's Goodstay Center in Wilmington.

Thursday, June 11 — The Art of Beverage

  • Learn about the making of beer, wine and cheese and taste some of the area's finest.
  • Featuring displays and presenters from Galer Estate Vineyard and Winery, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; Janssen’s Market, Greenville, Delaware; Twin Lakes Brewing Co., Greenville, Delaware; and Wilson Vineyard, Nottingham, Pennsylvania.

Participants of all ages are invited. Registration for this program is open to the public; membership in the Osher Lifelong Learning program is not required. 

The registration fee is $50 for the entire series, which includes food and beverage tastings, daily coffee and snacks and free parking. Tickets may also be purchased for individual sessions, at $10 for Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and $20 for Thursday. (To purchase individual tickets for Thursday, a ticket must be purchased for at least one other session or the whole series.)

About Osher Lifelong Learning

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at the University of Delaware are membership organizations that provide opportunities for adults 50 and over to learn, teach, and travel with their peers. 

There are no academic requirements for admission. The only requirements are interest in a continuing educational experience, support of the programs through participation, and the modest membership fee.
