The number of students reached by library instruction/information literacy sessions taught by librarians for courses at the request of faculty increased 20 percent from 2012-13 to 2013-14.

To meet this demand, Library Instruction Room 114 was transformed by the Library from a former collection processing space to become this new dual purpose space, which maximizes its use.

Room 114 has more than 50 seats, including laptop seating, two media tables with laptop monitors, various types of study chairs and 17 reconfigurable study tables.

Librarians work with hundreds of classes each year and are valuable partners for faculty members who assign research or multimedia projects to their students.  Librarians work closely with these classes to support student success in such assignments.  The demand for library instructional services results in librarians using active learning techniques to teach students about using important electronic, multimedia and print library collections.

Classes that integrate the use of the Library’s rare books and manuscripts into student assignments are also supported by librarians who teach students how to use, handle and analyze unique primary resources. Though librarians routinely visit classrooms around campus, the majority of librarian-led instruction takes place in the Morris Library itself, leading to a need for a flexible, technology-rich teaching space in which different modes of instruction can take place.

Library Instruction Room 114 meets this need through flexible wireless technology that will allow students to share and display their work on classroom laptops, as well as moveable furniture that will facilitate group work and problem-based class exercises.

On weekends and after 5 p.m. on weekdays, another increasing demand for space will be met.  Students may take advantage of Room 114 as a dedicated space for individual or group study. Room 114 was designed with student study needs in mind and features flexible and comfortable seating, numerous electrical outlets and robust wireless connectivity.

Two technology-enhanced group work stations are also available in Room 114 for use during evenings and weekends with large monitors that can easily be connected to laptop computers, allowing students to collaborate on projects and easily display their work.

Room 114 is located on the First Floor of the Morris Library in the Periodicals area.  Further information about the Library instruction program or to request Library instruction for a class may be obtained by visiting library.udel.edu/instruction/.
