UD's Lynn Snyder-Mackler to deliver APTA's Mary McMillan Lecture

3:59 p.m., May 28, 2015--Lynn Snyder-Mackler, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Delaware, has been selected to deliver the American Physical Therapy Association’s 46th annual Mary McMillan Lecture at 10 a.m., Friday, June 5.

The lecture will be part of APTA’s NEXT Conference and Exposition to be held at National Harbor, Maryland, on the Potomac River near Washington, D.C.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Recipients of the Mary McMillan Lecture Award are members of the association who have made distinguished contributions to the profession of physical therapy in administration, education, patient care or research.

"Our department is extremely proud of Lynn's accomplishments,” said Gregory E. Hicks, chair of the Department of Physical Therapy. “She has excelled as a scientist and has been an outspoken advocate for research excellence in our profession. Lynn is definitely deserving of this honor.”

For over 25 years Snyder-Mackler has been an international leader in developing evidence-based approaches for the rehabilitation of knee injuries, educating new physical therapy professionals and mentoring future rehabilitation scientists. 

Snyder-Mackler joined the UD faculty in 1989 and has received acclaim for her research involving electrotherapy and sports physical therapy, as well as knee, shoulder and spine rehabilitation and neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

Snyder-Mackler was selected the 2009 recipient of the Francis Alison Faculty Award, the University’s highest faculty honor.

In 2012, the National Institutes of Health honored Snyder-Mackler with the MERIT Award for her research on the rehabilitation of knee injuries. 

In addition to her work at UD, Snyder-Mackler is a visiting researcher for the Norwegian Research Center for Active Rehabilitation and serves on the scientific board for the World Village of Women's Sports in Sweden.

Named an APTA Catherine Worthingham Fellow in 2003, Snyder-Mackler has earned many other of the association’s honors, including the Eugene Michels New Investigator Award, Golden Pen Award, Chattanooga Research Award, Marian Williams Award, Helen Hislop Award, Orthopedic Section Steven J. Rose Award, and Section on Research John H. P. Maley Award.

Snyder-Mackler received a bachelor of arts degree from Johns Hopkins University, a certificate in physical therapy and a master of science degree in organizational behavior from the University of Pennsylvania, and a doctorate in applied anatomy and physiology from Boston University.
