Library celebrates 25th anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act

9:07 a.m., May 20, 2015--President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the first federal law ensuring civil rights protections for individuals with disabilities, on July 26, 1990.

The ADA guarantees that disabled citizens have equal access to businesses, places of employment, state and local government programs and services, as well as telecommunications.

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

To commemorate the signing of this landmark legislation, the University of Delaware Library will present a panel discussion titled “Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act” from 2-3:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 3, in the Class of 1941 Lecture Room in the Morris Library. The event is open to the University community.

The panelists will be: Laura Eisenman, associate professor in UD’s School of Education and adviser for the interdisciplinary disabilities studies minor; Anne Jannarone, director of the Office of Disability Support Services; and Jonathan Jeffery, associate librarian and Assistive Technology Center librarian, Reference and Instructional Services Department, University of Delaware Library. 

The panelists will speak about disabilities services available within the Morris Library and elsewhere on campus, and will assist in providing understanding of how better to support users with special needs.

At the end of the event Jeffery will conduct a tour of the Assistive Technology Center in the Morris Library.

The event is organized by the University of Delaware Library Diversity Committee.
