1:49 p.m., June 3, 2015--Gil Johnson, longtime associate director of event services within the University of Delaware Student Centers (USC), was awarded a Diversity Ambassador Award by the vice provost for diversity and the Office of the Provost during a reception held at Bayard Sharp Hall on Thursday, May 14, in recognition of his efforts to celebrate diversity at the University.

Johnson’s colleagues have long praised his commitment to providing outstanding accommodations for individuals of all genders through his oversight of operations within both USC facilities – Perkins Student Center, on east campus at 325 Academy Street, and Trabant University Center, on central campus at 17 West Main Street.

Honors Stories

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

Myriad amenities have been added under Johnson’s attentive leadership, including:

  • A nursing mother’s room in Perkins Student Center. This space, the first of two designated at UD’s Newark campus in 2010 to accommodate all USC guests in tending to maternal duties, is found in Room 128 near the parking garage entrance and across the hall from the Ewing Room.
  • Single stall gender-neutral restrooms within both facilities; exact locations can be found here.
  • Frosted privacy film over the windows of Trabant’s second-floor reservable spaces to assist clients such as student groups and departments in creating safe atmospheres for their events.

“Gil is often the first to remind others that everyone has unique needs, and that these can be met not only with impeccable service, but with grace and sincerity,” said Marilyn Prime, executive director of the USC. “We are truly blessed to have such a caring and consummate professional on our team.”

Each year, the vice provost for diversity bestows several recognition awards and scholarships upon individuals who work to promote diversity and inclusion at the University of Delaware. Carol Henderson has served as vice provost for diversity since July 2014.
