University Library opens digital Dale E. and Clarice Wolf scrapbooks
9:02 a.m., July 16, 2014--The University of Delaware Library has opened a new digital collection, “Scrapbooks from the Dale E. and Clarice Wolf Papers,” which covers the years 1987 to 1993.
Dale E. Wolf served as lieutenant governor of Delaware for the period 1989 to 1992 and briefly as governor from Dec. 31, 1992, through Jan. 19, 1993.

The Dale E. and Clarice Wolf Papers and memorabilia document Wolf’s military service in World War II, his early agricultural research and DuPont career, his political career and public service, as well as the community service of his wife, Clarice Wolf.
The digital collection presents eight scrapbooks of photographs, letters, programs, newspaper clippings and other items chronicling Wolf's six years in public office. This period of political activity and public service followed his long and successful career in agricultural research and development at DuPont.
The scrapbooks have been digitally reproduced by the Center for Digital Collections at the library and are available online through the digital collections.
Wolf resigned from DuPont in 1987 to accept Gov. Michael N. Castle’s appointment as director of Delaware development, where he was responsible for the state’s capital budget, housing for the poor, tourism and economic development.
Wolf was elected as the 23rd lieutenant governor of the state of Delaware in 1988, serving a four-year term with Castle. As lieutenant governor, Wolf oversaw the Senate and the Pardons Board, and chaired both the Drug and Alcohol Abuse Coordinating Council and the Adult Literacy Council. In 1989 President George H.W. Bush appointed him to the U.S. Intergovernmental Policy Advisory Committee.
When Castle was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and resigned from the governorship on Dec. 31, 1992, Wolf was sworn in and served as governor of Delaware until Jan. 19, 1993. He did not seek election to a full term as governor.
Wolf has served on advisory committees of UD’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, as well as on the boards of Girls Inc., the Red Cross and Christiana Care Medical Center. He has also served as chairman of Stand Up for What’s Right and Just, an organization dedicated to improving the criminal justice system in Delaware.
The scrapbooks illustrate Wolf’s work as Delaware’s director of development, his campaign for lieutenant governor and his brief stint as governor. State political activities, Dover Days, Return Day in Georgetown and other appearances such as the Delaware State Fair are included. Photographs include public figures such as Gov. Mike Castle, Vice President Dan Quayle, U.S. Sen. Bill Roth, Charles Colson, State Sen. Thurman Adams, President George H.W. Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The digitization of the Wolf scrapbooks was collaboration between library staff members in the Manuscripts and Archives Department, the Center for Digital Collections, and the Library Server and Data Management Department.
