9:54 a.m., Dec. 15, 2014--The University of Delaware Master Players Concert Series will continue its 2014-15 season with its first winter concert at 3 p.m., Saturday Jan. 10, in the Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts. 

Great Musical Families” is a vocal recital featuring American husband and wife vocalists Jonathan Lasch and Caitlin Lynch, who are leading singers of the Metropolitan Opera Company and other major opera companies, with acclaimed collaborative pianist Lydia Qiu.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

“The Master Players audience will witness another sensational concert when the family artists show their passion for vocal music and for each other, performing music from opera arias to art songs and a selection of Broadway musical songs,” said Xiang Gao, Trustees Distinguished Professor of Music at UD and director of the series.

Tickets for all events are $25 for adults; $20 for senior adults, alumni, faculty and staff; and $10 for students with ID. 

Starting this season, online purchase for tickets and pre-paid parking vouchers is available to all. Also, $5 student rush tickets will also be sold 30 minutes prior to the concert as a special offer from Master Players.

For Master Players audience members who are not familiar with the UD campus in Newark, visit the website and click “visit” for a list of recommended restaurants within walking and six-minute driving distance of all Master Players events, as well as detailed directions to suggested parking lots.

About the artists

Caitlin Lynch, soprano, has been declared “luminous” by The New York Times and “eloquent” by the Wall Street Journal.

She created the role of Eliza in composer Nico Muhly’s chamber opera Dark Sisters, which premiered at the Gotham Chamber Opera in New York with subsequent performances at the Opera Company of Philadelphia.

She has performed on the main stage at the Metropolitan Opera as Biancofiore in Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini, and with the Pittsburgh Opera, the Glimmerglass Opera, Lyric Opera Baltimore, Dallas Opera, Seattle Opera and Opera Cleveland.

Lynch was awarded first place in the 2008 Houston Grand Opera Competition, completed the Seattle Opera Young Artist Program and received a 2008 Sara Tucker Grant.

Jonathan Lasch, baritone, has been described by the Cincinnati Enquirer as possessing a voice of “arresting color and heft.”

He has performed in Handel’s Messiah with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, in William Bolcom’s View from the Bridge with the Michigan Opera Theatre, and as bass soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the Ford Theatre in Detroit. 

Lasch has participated in young artist programs at Glimmerglass Opera, Seattle Opera and Portland Opera while completing studies at the universities of Hartford, Cincinnati and Michigan.

Lydia Qiu, collaborative pianist, is a guest artist with the Master Players series. She was born into the family of an orchestral conductor and a soprano in Chengdu, China, and moved to Beijing where worked as a piano accompanist at the Central Conservatory of Music.

She came to the United States and studied at Capital University and the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati before entering the University of Michigan, where she studied with the renowned collaborative pianist Martin Katz.

Qui is a vocal coach, staff accompanist and coordinator for the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre and Dance, and continues to work in China, conducting master classes at conservatories throughout the country.
