Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Announcements

Linda Stein, librarian, Reference and Instructional Services Department, University of Delaware Library, was elected to a one-year term 2014-15 as secretary of the Literatures in English Section (LES) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) of the American Library Association (ALA). Her one-year term of office began on July 1.

Honors

C.P. Huang, Donald C. Phillips Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was honored through a special symposium held Aug. 10 by the American Chemical Society. Huang, who joined the UD faculty in 1974 and received the Francis Alison Award in 2008, is known worldwide for his work in environmental physical chemistry. He is credited with conducting pioneering research not only on the fate, transport and behavior of pollutants in aquatic environments but also on treatment and remediation methods. The symposium was attended by many experts in the field.

Presentations

Eric Furst, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and director of the Center for Molecular and Engineering Thermodynamics, is one of four invited speakers who will make presentations Sept. 15-19 in China as part of the fifth Unilever-Royal Society of Chemistry International Symposium on Functional Materials Science-Biomaterials. Furst is joined by Justin Cooper-White of the University of Queensland, Australia; David Haddleton of the University of Warwick, United Kingdom; and Sagrario Pascual of the Universite du Maine, France. They will speak Sept. 15 at a symposium at the University of Science and Technology in Hong Kong, hosted by Tang Ben Zhong, professor; Sept. 17 at a symposium at Sichuan University in Chengdu, hosted by Gu Zhongwei, professor; and Sept. 19 at the Unilever Research and Development Center in Shanghai.
