VCU's Gooden to deliver Messick Fellow lecture on race, social equity

8:36 a.m., April 1, 2015--Susan T. Gooden of Virginia Commonwealth University will deliver a Messick Fellow lecture on her recent book Race and Social Equity: A Nervous Area of Government at 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 15, at the Marriott Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware.

The lecture, which is sponsored by UD’s School of Public Policy and Administration,will be followed by a question and answer session and a reception.

Gooden is a professor of public administration and policy in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs and executive director of the Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute at VCU.

Gooden is president-elect of the American Society for Public Administration, the largest and most prominent professional association for public administration. She is also faculty affiliate at Duke University’s Research Network on Racial and Ethnic Inequality.

Prior to her current academic appointment, Gooden was an associate professor at the Center for Public Administration and Policy at Virginia Tech, where she received early promotion and tenure and served as founder and director of the Race and Social Policy Research Center.

Gooden teaches courses in public policy and administration, social equity and public policy analysis, research methods and social welfare policy. Her research focuses on social equity.  

Gooden was appointed to the Commission on Peer Review and Accreditation, the accrediting arm of the Network of Associated Schools of Public Policy, Affairs and Administration. She has previously served as an elected member to the national policy council of the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management.

Gooden received a Fulbright Specialist Award to Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates. 

A native of Martinsville and Henry County, Virginia, she received an associate degree in natural science from Patrick Henry Community College, a bachelor’s degree in English from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in political science from Virginia Tech. She received her doctorate from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.
