Fulbright awards

Three University of Delaware students and an alumna have received word this spring that they will travel abroad as part of the newest class of Fulbright Student Program award winners.

Peace Corps plans

Two University of Delaware students, John McCarron and Bridgette Spritz, have been selected as Peace Corps volunteers and will serve in Ghana and Rwanda.

During her lecture, appropriately titled “Fulbright: The Best Decision I Ever Made,” Stevenson will reflect on how her year studying hip dislocation prevention and treatment with orthopedic surgeon James Robb and professor Peter Donnelly has influenced her life today.

The lecture is open to all members of the University community and will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Gore Recital Hall of the Roselle Center for the Arts. Attendees are invited to stay on for a post-lecture reception celebrating the launch of the series.  This lecture is co-sponsored with the University Honors Program.

For the second installment of the series, UD’s Elaine Salo will speak on Thursday, April 9, as part of UD’s South Africa Month.

Salo, an associate professor in the departments of Political Science and International Relations and Women and Gender Studies, received a Fulbright Award from 1984-86 to pursue her master’s degree at Clark University.

A South Africa native, Salo will present “Women’s Empowerment through Fulbright: A Personal Reflection.” Her talk will describe not only how Fulbright impacted her own career trajectory but also supports diversity and acts as a source of empowerment for South African women in higher education. Salo’s talk will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Multipurpose Room C of the Trabant University Center.

Juan Cole and Bassam Haddad will round out the inaugural series on Monday, April 27, with a talk titled “The Middle East in Crisis: Causes and Prospects.”

Cole, the Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History and director of the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Michigan, was awarded a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship to India in 1982. The lecture, to take place at 7 p.m. in Mitchell Hall, is also part of the Center for Global and Area Studies spring lecture series on “Globalization, Organized Crime and Terrorist Networks.”

Cole and Haddad will discuss terrorism and organized crime around the globe from a holistic perspective.

The Fulbright Spring Lecture Series is a part of UD’s Fulbright Initiative, begun in 2014 to increase student, faculty and alumni awareness of opportunities for international scholarship and service available via the Fulbright Program.

The UD Fulbright Society, also founded in 2014, honors, celebrates and connects the University’s 150-plus Fulbright recipients.

Any student interested in learning more about the U.S. Fulbright Student Program is invited to attend an information session on Tuesday, April 14, or Tuesday, April 21, at 3:30 p.m. in the Career Services Center. Log in via Blue Hen Careers to register.
