8:50 a.m., Sept. 7, 2012--With a number of career fairs scheduled in coming weeks and months on the University of Delaware campus, consultants say that networking is key to making a great first impression on employers.
On Tuesday evening, Sept. 4, representatives of Deloitte Consulting presented a workshop titled “How to Network” to more than 130 students in the Alfred Lerner Hall Atrium.

The workshop was sponsored by the UD Career Services Center, UDREAM, the Accounting Student Association, the Association for Information Systems, Delta Sigma Pi, Alpha Omega Epsilon and the American Society of Mechanical Engineering.
A Deloitte Consulting representative opened the event by noting that “networking accounts for over 69 percent of annual hires, and it’s the best way to find a job or internship.”
While networking is a vital part during the job search process, building a network can be done every day, the representative said, adding that the connections a job seeker makes can turn into friends, colleagues and professional prospects. It can also help you progress though a career.
Guidelines were provided on how to prepare before, during and after a networking event.
To conclude the workshop, the Deloitte Consulting representatives presented a skit showing the difference between the “do’s and don’ts” of networking.
Students who were unable to attend the workshop can check the University Career Services Center calendar for future career-oriented events.
