MetLife to solicit employee/retiree beneficiary information
3:31 p.m., Sept. 27, 2012--Effective July 1, 2012, the University contracted with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. (MetLife) to administer the Employee/Retiree Group Life Insurance Plan. As part of the transition in administration, the University has asked MetLife to conduct a full re-solicitation of beneficiary information by asking all employees (and all retiree participants) to provide new beneficiary information to MetLife.
Individuals who have not yet provided this information will be contacted by mail, at their home address. This mailing will include a blank Beneficiary Designation Form to update beneficiary information directly with MetLife. To designate a beneficiary for UD life insurance, employees (and participating retirees) may also visit the MetLife Life Insurance site through http://www.udel.edu/metlife-auth/. These designations will replace any currently on file with UD. Existing beneficiary forms currently on file with the University have NOT been transferred to MetLife.

Beneficiary designation forms must be filed with MetLife by Dec. 1, 2012. After this date, any existing beneficiary forms on file with the University will be invalid and will not be forwarded to, or honored by, MetLife. If no beneficiary information is on file with MetLife by Dec. 1, 2012, life insurance proceeds will be paid according to the terms of the group certificate, which may not correspond with an individual’s wishes.
Individuals who have already provided MetLife with an updated Beneficiary Designation Form are not required to provide one again during this re-solicitation.

Q: Why is completing a new beneficiary form necessary?
A: Employees and participating retirees must complete a new Beneficiary Designation Form with MetLife to ensure that beneficiary information is up-to-date, easily accessible and in compliance with applicable legal requirements.
Q: How do I complete a new beneficiary form?
A: You can complete this form online at http://www.udel.edu/metlife-auth/. Individuals without Internet access can use the paper form included with the mailing from MetLife. The paper form must be returned directly to MetLife.
Q: If I already completed a MetLife Beneficiary Designation Form, do I need to fill out another form?
A: If you have already completed a MetLife beneficiary designation form online or mailed a paper copy to MetLife, it is not necessary for you to provide one again, unless you would like to make a change.
Q: What will happen if I don’t complete a new beneficiary form?
A: If MetLife does not have a new beneficiary designation on file, you risk not having life insurance proceeds distributed in accordance with your wishes. Any beneficiary forms you may have previously provided to the University have NOT been transferred to MetLife, so it is important to make your designations immediately.
