9:58 a.m., Nov. 8, 2011--While the state's official Veterans Day ceremonies will be hosted by the Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs and Marine Corps League on Friday, Nov. 11, at the Memorial Plaza at the Delaware Memorial Bridge in New Castle, there are several memorials to fallen service men and women on the University of Delaware campus.

Originally observed as Armistice Day, Veterans Day commemorates the official ending of World War I on Nov. 18, 1918, at 11 a.m.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation making Nov. 11 a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

In UD's Memorial Hall, a Book of the Dead contains the names of all Delawareans who died in World War I. Located centrally on The Green on UD’s Newark campus, and dedicated on May 23, 1925, Memorial Hall and the Book of the Dead commemorate the 270 service members from the First State who died in the World War I. On Nov. 11, the carillon atop Memorial Hall will toll at 11 a.m. in remembrance.

A memorial marker on The Green in front of Mitchell Hall bears the names of UD students and alumni who died in World War II.

On the lawn of the Academy Building, which houses the UD Office of Communications and Marketing, a memorial stone honors those from Newark who died in Korea, World War II and Vietnam.

Delaware Memorial Bridge War Memorial

Since 1951, when the Delaware Memorial Bridge was dedicated to the memory of Delaware and New Jersey’s veterans, special services have been held on Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

A War Memorial area constructed by the Delaware River and Bay Authority at the site contains a lasting wall with the names of nearly 15,000 service men and women from the two states who were killed in service to their countries.

A reflecting pool and a Soldier Statue also have been dedicated at the site. The statue particularly honors those men and women of New Jersey and Delaware who died or were declared missing in action in combat since the Korean Conflict. The statue, "One Army," stands near the reflecting pool.

Each year on both Memorial Day and on Veterans Day, officials, veterans, family members and special guests gather at the War Memorial to honor those who have served their country in the armed forces.
