Goodwin honored

Professor awarded fellowship status by American School Health Association

1:46 p.m., Nov. 3, 2011--Stephen C. Goodwin, associate professor in the Department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition at the University of Delaware, has been named a fellow of the American School Health Association. He was recognized at ASHA’s annual conference in Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 12.

The association credited Goodwin with “work[ing] tirelessly to promote good health in Delaware.” He was cited for his efforts with the Delaware Department of Education on a number of initiatives, most notably working on the state physical education standards.

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

He also contributed to a state-wide marketing campaign sponsored by the Delaware Governor’s Council on Lifestyles and Fitness; has conducted numerous in-service programs for health and physical educators; and has coordinated Project ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously) (ACES) and walk-to-school mini-grant programs throughout the state.

In addition, Goodwin has been involved in the “Get Up and Do Something” grant through the Delaware Department of Public Health, and he is past vice president for health and president of the Delaware Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He has also served as the vice president for health for the Eastern District Association of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.

A member of ASHA since 1992, Goodwin is currently in his seventh year as chair of the teaching techniques section for ASHA’s annual conference. Since 1993 he has presented at least 10 sessions at the conference, including poster presentations, roundtable discussions, independent sessions and conference workshops. He also has been a member of the by-laws committee and has sat on several association councils.

Goodwin has published two articles and three teaching techniques in the Journal of School Health, and he has published numerous articles in the Journal of Health Education, The Physical Educator, the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and the Pennsylvania Journal of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance He has also made more than 20 conference presentations.

Advancement to fellowship status is granted to ASHA members who have maintained regular membership for 10 or more consecutive years and have shown substantive and consistent leadership and service on the association’s committees, councils, sections or boards. Candidates for fellowship also must demonstrate leadership and service in the field of school health through national, state and district organizations.
