12:58 p.m., July 22, 2011--Apple's new operating system, Mac OS X Lion (10.7), is now available at no additional cost for University of Delaware-owned computers.

The University has a campus-wide license for Apple’s Mac OS X (10.6 and 10.7), iLife (’09 and ’11), and iWork ’09 software that allows installation on any UD-owned computer. The license does not include work-at-home rights or personal-use rights for personally owned computers.

Individual purchasers who have newer versions of Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later) installed on their computers can buy Mac OS X Lion from the App Store, accessible from the Apple menu.

Mac OS X 10.7 system requirements: Your Mac must have an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor. To find out if your computer has one of these processors, open the Apple menu (click the Apple icon at the top left of your computer screen), then choose About This Mac from the drop-down menu.

To purchase Apple software for a personally owned computer, use the App store on the Apple menu (Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later) or go to the online Apple Store for Education (older versions of Mac OS X 10).

UD Information Technologies expects to receive McAfee VirusScan for the Lion operating system in the near future. It will also be available on the udeploy.udel.edu server. IT provides McAfee VirusScan, at no additional cost, for both University-owned computers and computers owned by University employees and students.
