Summer institute for faculty

2011 Summer Faculty Institute offers “passport to success”

TEXT SIZE

11:47 a.m., May 9, 2011--Faculty from across campus are invited to this year’s Summer Faculty Institute (SFI), with the theme “passport to success.” The sessions will introduce participants to recent instructional research and the latest technological capabilities, beginning with a keynote presentation on May 31 by Susan Smith Nash, co-author of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning: Classroom and Online Instruction.

The SFI is a long-running creativity and innovation “how-to” conference. The focus is on faculty and the teaching and learning opportunities afforded by technology. Connections are made across all disciplines and include both online and classroom teaching. This isn’t a listen-and-leave conference; it’s more like a college short course in which participants develop the technical skills to apply innovative techniques to their teaching.

FYI Stories

June 6: UDid It! Picnic

All UD faculty and staff members are invited to attend the annual UDid It! employee appreciation picnic, set from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Monday, June 6, on The Green.

If you are using two-factor authentication (2FA), even if a hacker has your password, your information is probably safe.

Those attending will be able to apply what you learn at SFI right away as they prepare their fall courses, and staying in touch with the SFI cohort and staff will help them achieve the goals set on the first day of the institute.

Sessions will be offered Tuesday, May 31, through Friday, June 3. After breakfast, a featured speaker will present a new topic each day from 9-10 a.m., followed by a daily track from 10:15 a.m.-3:15 p.m. The week will take the shape of a course: Faculty will be “students” for the week, participating in sessions led by other faculty members and IT staff. Encouraged to experience the student perspective, participants will be introduced to every aspect of a course while also acquiring the technical and pedagogical skills to use the teaching tools themselves.

The SFI will be co-presented by faculty and IT staff. Each session is geared toward a specific deliverable from the hands-on, project-based activities.

Full-week program

Faculty are encouraged to register for the full-week program to gain the full value of the Institute experience. Faculty who register for the full week will define their goals and questions on the first day and receive extra assistance in the fulfillment of those goals. Full-week participants will have special follow-up opportunities to continue conversations and share progress throughout the year. Most importantly, full-week participants finish the week with the full set of deliverables from all the hands-on, project-based sessions, along with a certificate of accomplishment.

Prerequisite

Participants must bring a laptop computer to class every day. Power and data connections will be available at every seat. If you would like to participate but do not have access to a laptop computer, please notify ats-info@udel.edu in advance of your registration.

Track 1--The course experience: 2011

The week will take the shape of a course: Faculty will be “students” for the week, participating in sessions led by other faculty members and IT staff. Encouraged to experience the student perspective, participants will be introduced to every aspect of a course while also acquiring the technical and pedagogical skills to use these teaching tools themselves. This track will share the daily, featured speaker with the main program.

Track 2--Real educational experiences in virtual worlds

In this track, you will learn the basic skills needed to navigate in the environment, change your appearance, communicate with others, make friends, travel to other locations and talk with educators from around the world. Fully immerse yourself as we tour engaging educational simulations covering a wide range of topics, including art, business, literature, museums, science, medicine and more. At each destination, we will be met by the creators of the simulations and will learn first hand about their successes and challenges meeting their educational goals in a virtual environment. This track will share the daily, featured speaker with the main program.

New this year: Participate online

This year faculty can participate completely online. Sessions will be delivered live to your computer no matter where you are. You can communicate with the presenters and participants in the room through text chat, audio and/or video.
