“The weekend before last (May 28), we sent thousands of Blue Hens off to start making brand new lives and plans,” Harker said. “Last weekend, we welcomed thousands of Blue Hens back home, and showed them what we’ve been up to while they were away.”

Both Commencement and Alumni Weekend demonstrate that UD is both a popular place to get a great education and to revisit and share post-graduation experiences with fellow Blue Hens, Harker said.

“We can make a difference both here in the state and around the world, and we have made a difference,” Harker said. “We are UD, and I’m just so proud to be able to say that, knowing the incredibly hard work you put into this University over the past year.”

Catered by UD Dining Services and hosted by UD administrators, the scrumptious sit-down lunch included rosemary chicken, meatball sandwiches, fruit and vegetable salads, cookies, pretzels and chips, topped off with the crowd favorite ice cream from the recently opened UDairy Creamery.

The picnic also was an opportunity to thank the more than 900 members of the UD community whose names were scrolled on screen recognizing their donations to the UD Faculty and Staff Campaign.

“You contributed more than $766,000, touching 239 different departments, colleges, scholarship centers and programs,” Harker said. “The fact that you serve UD every day through your work, and then serve UD through your generosity and support is truly amazing.”

He applauded 2011 campaign chairs Peggy Bottorff, associate provost for administration and enrollment services, and Jack Baroudi, professor of management and information services, for their commitment and leadership.

Harker also thanked the 242 volunteers who helped make Alumni Weekend a success.

David Brond, UD vice president for communications and marketing, and Jennifer "J.J." Davis, vice president for finance and administration, took the stage at several intervals to announce the names of raffle-winning faculty and staff.
