Uninstalling an older verison (if necessary)
If Exceed is already installed on your system, you MUST
un-install it before installing the new version if:
- You are currently running a version of Exceed prior to
6.2; or
- You are installing the student edition.
If neither of the above conditions apply, you may skip to the
installation instructions.
In order to un-install Exceed:
- If you have made your own personalized settings for Exceed, you
should run Exceed's Xconfig program and take notes on your changes
before continuing. You may want to use Xconfig to make the same
personalizations after completing the new installation described
below. You may also want to make a backup copy of your user
directory to avoid losing any customized settings you have created.
This directory may be located in several different places, depending
on the version of Exceed and the version of Windows. The default
locations are:
Exceed 6.x on Windows 95/98/ME:
C:\Program Files\Exceed.95
Exceed 6.x on Windows NT 4.0 or 2000:
C:\Program Files\Exceed.NT
Exceed 7.x on Windows 95/98/ME:
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Hummingbird\Connectivity\7.xx\Exceed
Exceed 7.x on Windows NT 4.0:
C:\WINNT\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Hummingbird\Connectivity\7.xx\Exceed
Exceed 7.x on Windows 2000/XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Hummingbird\Connectivity\7.xx\Exceed
Note that some files, particularly Exceed configuration (.cfg) and
Xsession (.ses) files, may not be compatible between versions of Exceed.
- Disable the Inetd and Jconfig daemons if they are running:
- On Windows 95/98/ME, look for this icon -
- on the Windows Taskbar (to the left of the clock). If it appears,
click on it, then in the Inetd Configuration Window select Exit,
and then select OK. If you don't see the demon icon, then the program
is not running.
- On Windows NT/2000/XP, open the Services Control Panel (located
under "Administrative Tools"), and stop the "Hummingbird Inetd"
and "Hummingbird Jconfig Daemon" services if they are running.
- Go to the Control Panel and open "Add/Remove Programs." Click the Exceed
entry and then click the "Add/Remove" (or "Remove") button to start the
un-installation process. If the installer complains about not being able
to find files, insert the CD that you installed Exceed from originally.
If that doesn't work, try re-running the setup program from the original
CD and selecting the "Remove" option (versions 7.0 and higher only).
- Reboot the system.
- Delete the old Exceed directory and its contents, if the directory
is still there. (Look in C:\Program Files for a folder named "Exceed.95",
"Exceed.NT", or "Hummingbird".)
Installing Exceed
- Close all programs that are currently running. If you have any version
of Exceed prior to 6.2 installed, or are upgrading from a previous year's
student edition, be sure to perform the
uninstallation steps above.
- If you are installing on an NT, 2000, or XP system, log in as "administrator"
or as a user with administrative rights. The setup program will give you
the option to install Exceed so that it is accessible by all users, and
this is the recommended procedure. Setup may not run properly if you
do not have administrative rights, and if you do not choose the option
to install Exceed for "Anyone who uses this computer (all users)" then
you will only be able to run Exceed when logged in as the same user as
when you ran the installer.
- Start the Exceed installer:
- If you obtained a CD from the TSC, place the CD in your CD-ROM drive.
The setup program should appear within 30 seconds. If it does not appear,
double-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop or in your start menu,
double-click the icon for your CD-ROM drive. Double-click the "Msetup"
(or "Msetup.exe") icon.
- If you downloaded the software from the purchase site, unzip the downloaded
file (Windows ME and XP have built-in support for zip files, otherwise you
will need to obtain a copy of WinZip
if you don't already have it installed). Double-click the "Msetup" (or "Msetup.exe")
icon.
- Choose "Install Exceed" and then "Personal Installation" from the menu.
- You will be prompted to choose a language for the installation. This
language will be used for the install process and in all Exceed
dialogs, menu options, etc. once the software is installed.
- When you see the "Welcome" screen, click "Next." Read and indicate
agreement to the License Agreement (assuming you agree!) and click
"Next".
- Fill in your name for the user name. You can fill in
"University of Delaware" for the organization or just leave it blank.
Click "Next". If you are installing on an NT/2K/XP system, this is the
screen where you can choose to install for all users or just the current
user. Installing for all users is recommended.
- You will be prompted to choose the installation path for Exceed.
By default Exceed will install itself in the standard program file
area (C:\Program Files on most systems). Click "Next" to accept
the installation directory.
(You should not change the default directory unless it's essential.
For example, you might need to choose a different hard drive if
your C: drive is nearly full.)
- You will be presented with a choice of three installation options:
"Typical", "Custom", or "Complete". The "Typical" option will
install all of the components that are necessary to use Exceed, but
leaves many non-essential components out. "Custom" will allow you
to choose which components will be installed, and "Complete" will
install all components. The recommended choice is "Custom", and
make the following alterations:
- Leave "Accessories" as it is.
- Under "Exceed" -> "Exceed Fonts", add any non-English fonts which
you think you may need. If in doubt, you can install all fonts
by clicking the box next to "Exceed Fonts" and selecting "this
feature, and all subfeatures ...".
- Click the box next to "HostExplorer" and choose "This feature will
not be available.", unless you have a specific need to install
this portion of the software. Most of the functionality provided
by HostExplorer is provided by other UD-distributed software.
- Click the box next to "Hummingbird Inetd" and choose "This feature
will not be available." Hummingbird Inetd is an internet daemon
service, and is not recommended for use on your personal PC.
- Click the box next to "Online Documentation" and choose "This
feature, and all subfeatures ..." to copy Exceed documentation
to your hard drive.
- Under "System Administration", make sure "Jconfig", "Jconfig Daemon",
and "Sconfig" are deselected (by clicking the boxes and choosing
"This feature will not be available.")
If you find that you have omitted a feature that you want to use,
or installed a feature that you don't need, you may always add or
remove components later by re-running the setup program.
- Once you have chosen your installation options, click "Next" and
then "Install" to start the installation. Depending on the speed
of your system and whether or not a previous version of Exceed
must be removed first, this may take several minutes.
- Once all of the files have been copied to your hard drive, you will
be prompted to choose a keyboard layout file. Unless your keyboard
is not a standard US-English (QWERTY) keyboard, keep the default
setting of "us.kbf" and click "Next".
- You will be prompted to set a password to lock your Exceed
configuration. We recommend that you do not set a password
on a single-user workstation - the password doesn't really prevent
anyone from changing your settings (if they are sufficiently
determined), and can cause more trouble than it is worth if you
forget it. Click "Skip" to move to the next screen, or enter
the same password in both input areas and click "Next".
- You will be prompted to run the Xperf program, which optimizes
Exceed's graphical performance. It is recommended that you run
this program to ensure the best possible performance; however,
if you are in a hurry you can click "Skip" and run Xperf later.
If you elect to run it, do not move the mouse while the test
graphics are displayed on the screen.
- When the setup process completes, you will be prompted to click
"Finish". You may also be prompted to reboot, in which case you
should do so.
- This documentation is stored on the cd in the folder "UD Exceed docs".
You may want to copy this folder to your hard drive for easy reference.
However, whenever possible you should check the online documentation
(linked at the top of each page) for additions and corrections.
Next you should read the
instructions for configuring Exceed for UD.
For some instructions on further configuring Exceed to fit your needs and
tips on making efficient use of Exceed, see
Customizing Your UNIX Composers Account, and
How to Use Exceed. You may also consult the
Exceed User's Guide, which can be found in the Programs menu under
"Hummingbird Connectivity V7.1/Online Documentation" if you chose
to install the documentation during installation. If you didn't,
you can re-run the installer and choose "add/remove components" to
install the documents. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader in order
to view the guide; you can install Acrobat Reader from the Exceed
CD (on the "Third Party Add-ons" menu) or download the latest version
from
Adobe's site.
