MINUTES

Faculty Senate Student and Faculty Honors Committee

March 7, 2008

8:30-10:00 a.m.

Room 130 Hullihen Hall

Members Present: Kirsten Andrews, Mohsen Badiey, Jan Bibik, Michael Gilbert, Linda Gottfredson, Rhonda Hyde, Heidi Kaufman, Katharine Kerrane, Zachary Schafer, Ismat Shah, and Jonathan Urick

1. The Feb. 15, 2008 minutes were approved.

2. Nominations for the Teaching, Advising, and Graduate Student Teaching awards were collected from the 5 groups. Linda will compile and post these nominations on the Web Page for final selection of the awardees. She will also create the Summary Statistics sheet, which includes history of nominations and date of hire.

3. Jonathan gave quick update on “Facebook advertisement”. The ad received 102 clicks and the total cost was less than $50. He will provide a complete report and recommendations for next year.

4. There was a decision to include a statement in the award solicitation to emphasize complete anonymity of the nominees.

5. Agenda item regarding rewording of the Teaching and Advising award to make them parallel was approved by the committee.

6. Several questions regarding Excellence Awards were discussed: The letters refer to the order they appeared in the Agenda:

b & d: Should there be a limit on number of times winning an Excellence Award? General consensus was YES. The methodology, including the possible establishment of a Life Time Achievement Award, will be discussed later.

c: Should we do routine audits or spot audits for self-campaigners? General consensus was NO. It would create more problems than it solves.

e: Should we rethink the Advising Award and/or eligibility for it to include non-faculty? The question has arisen because students and professionals have written, frustrated, that they cannot nominate a favorite (professional) advisor. General consensus was NO, partly because we are a faculty committee but also because including professional advisors would require us to compare apples and oranges. We might, however, recommend that the Administration revisit the prior administration’s decision to eliminate merit awards for staff and professionals.

Next meeting is at 8:00-10:00 March 14.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 a.m.
