Training

The Office of Equity and Inclusion offers several trainings geared toward appreciating the differences that make up the entire community at the University of Delaware. These trainings not only tie into UD's overall commitment to creating a diverse working and learning environment, but also mark good-faith efforts to providing compliance to federal regulations in these areas. Our goal is to celebrate the differences that bring us together, and these trainings aid in that celebration.

OEI offers these trainings, meant to compliment the offerings of Employee Education and Development, to provide faculty and staff the opportunity to gain insight to the goals and work of our office in a safe and open-hearted training environment.

Who should participate in these trainings?

We believe that everyone in the UD community can benefit from our trainings. The formalized trainings mentioned below are structured for staff and faculty. However, we do provide trainings for students as well, using these trainings as a template, usually in a different format and/or timeframe.

These trainings are offered once each semester. If a group or department wants a "private class," arrangements can be made for that to happen. Simply contact OEI to discuss possibilities. Please keep in mind that our trainings are very interactive and discussion-based, so it is ideal to have a training class with a minimum of 12 people.

What types of trainings does OEI offer?

We offer formalized training in the following topics:

Taking Adversity out of Diversity

This workshop will be specially presented by Dr. Maura J. Cullen, who is considered one of the foremost authorities on issues of diversity and leadership having over 25 years of experience as a diversity trainer/speaker at over 500 universities and organizations.  As the University of Delaware acknowledges and values each member of the UD community as being unique and different in their own way, sometimes differences can be judged or misunderstood by others.  Dr. Marua J. Cullen will educate the UD community on simplifying the complex issues of diversity in an entertaining and educational manner.

Dr. Maura J. Cullen received her Doctorate in social justice and diversity education from the University of Massachusetts, and is the author of "35 Dumb Things Well-Intended People Say: Surprising Things We Say That Widen The Diversity Gap".

The workshop will be offered in two different sessions.

Duration: 2.5 hours

Session 1:  Thursday, April 5, 2012, 9:00am – 11:30am

Session 2:  Thursday, April 5, 2012, 1:30pm – 4:00pm

ADA for Managers

This training is designed to provide managers and administrators an opportunity to become familiar with the American with Disabilities Act as it pertains to the workplace, as well as information about the university's policies and procedures, information about the best way to identify reasonable accommodations, communicating with people with disabilities, and thoughts on how people with disabilities can be incorporated into the workplace. It also includes information on the various resources available that can provide valuable guidance for those with disabilities and for those who wish to learn more about supporting those with a disability.

Duration: 1.5 hours

Sexual Harassment Compliance for Managers

Supervisors, managers, and department heads are responsible for assuming an active role in the prevention of sexual harassment on campus. This session gives you reminders and new information about how to recognize sexual harassment. This is particularly important for managers, as you are charged with responding to incidents you know about or reasonably should know about involving people who report to you.

Duration: 2 hours
Session: April 24, 2012

LGBT Allies Training Program

Who is the LGBTIQQAA community and why do they need so many letters? What is it like to come out of the closet? Is being gay a choice? How can I help my transgender student? The Allies Training Program covers common terms used in the LGBT community, addresses issues of homophobia and heterosexism in our culture, describes the process of coming out of the closet, and provides you with the resources necessary to help students and other employees who may reach out to you for support. The goal of this program is to create a network of individuals who are prepared to openly support the LGBT community at the University and to address any issues that may arise in the workplace context.

Duration: 2 hours
Session: March 20 and 22, 2012 (Must attend both sessions)

Workplace Bystanders and Bullies: Stand Up To Make A Difference

Studies have indicated that somewhere between one-third and one-half of all employees experience some type of workplace bullying or harassment - either as a victim or an observer. In the workplace, this behavior can be very damaging. The effects are far-reaching, sometimes unintended, and often create low job satisfaction. So, when you hear inappropriate comments or behavior, what do you do? Often, in cases like this, observers are not sure what to do or fear they might make things worse if they stand up. Whether the issue at hand is based on gender, sexual orientation, race, spirituality, ethnicity, or age, this workshop will arm you with tactics to interject, respond, correct, and do the right thing next time - all with courage, grace, and confidence.

Duration: 2 hours
Session: April 26, 2012

Search Committee Chair Training

This brief training – required for all searches conducted at UD, regardless of the vacancy – consists of a meeting with the Search Chair and a member of either OEI or HR-Recruitment to ensure that the search process is fair and equitable, are compliant with Affirmative Action standards and the University's commitment to diversity. This meeting also provides the Search Chair with helpful interviewing etiquette (good questions to ask, illegal questions, etc.), resources for trailing partners, a concise checklist of duties, and more.

Duration: 30 minutes
Session: Made by appointment

Diversity and Multiculturalism Training

We believe in the rights and dignity of all employees and students, regardless of race, color, gender, age, religion, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. After all, aren't these basic freedoms something we all want for ourselves? This training discusses stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination, and being sensitive to the differences of colleagues.
