Course Description

What you are to experience is a totally different kind of learning environment--one that reflects an atmosphere similar to that in the actual workplace. To be successful in this kind of environment, you must allocate your time carefully, demonstrate self-management skills, be creative, and perform in a fast-paced setting. You will be making continuous decisions as to what to do next. This unique experience has been designed with SUCCESS in MIND. What you are about to learn may shock you, but this experience illustrates why consumer policy must adapt to the telecommunications era upon us. Now, proceed to the sets of hot buttons below and begin your voyage into a new era where anything is possible.

Course Requirements

Scheduled class attendance is required, and it is the student's responsibility to seek out assistance when completing pc tasks using the Internet, etc.  Students will be teamed with at least one other individual for the purpose of planning, organizing and implementing an on-line global business competing in the telecommunication's industry selling telephone service, cable television access, and Internet acess.   Course requirements are divided into 5 areas:

        1.  Study Readings Systematically (Shaw and Siebel Texts)
        2.  Meet Deadlines for Submitting Results of PC Lab Activities
        3.  Keep Weekly Innovative Log Up-To-Date
        4.  Collaborate on Initiation of Global Telecommunications Company
        5.  Complete Assessments On-Time

Evaluation of Student

Upon completion of each WWW activity in this experiential learning sequence, students up will awarded merit point which reflect the following percentage weights.   The percentage allocations are based on a 100-point rating scale also indicated below.

Attendance Policy

This class consists of 14 weeks of interactive learning. Students will be expected to attend all classes scheduled to meet on alternating days. Special activities will be completed outside of class.   If you anticipate missing a scheduled class, please send email note to Dr. Morrison at :jlm@.udel.edu.
Perfect attendance will result in a bonus of 2 points to be added to final course numerical grade.

Electronic Mail

(2 points)

Readings:  Shaw Text - Chapter 1 (2/11/2000)
Deadline:  Sunday Midnight, February 13, 2000. (Penalty Implemented for Late Submission)

Tasks To Be Accomplished -

___       Task #1 -  Access your personal account.
___       Task #2 - Send email to Dr. Morrison indicating pc account is operating.
  ___     Task #3 - Send email to team member.

When you receive a response from Dr. Morrison, he will provide you with an E-mail address of another student. You will then be obligated to send a message-stating who you are. This is important since this person will be your team member for the semester.

___Task #1 - Access each of the following search services.(a)  Identify 5 tips that will assist

Once you are into that browser, study its format and test your ability to move about for a brief period. I chair an independent federal regulatory agency created in 1934. I am responsible for regulating interstate and international communications by radio, T.V. satellite, and cable. I am directed by 5 commissioners appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate for five year terms.
  1. Who am I? (person's name)
  2. Identify 3 characteristics about my professional background.
  3. Who are 3 of my fellow commissioners? (their names)
  4. Identify 3 of issues which I as Chair of this agency have been most vocal within the last 3 years.

  ___Task #4  - Attain information to solve the following problem.

Let's look for everyone's favorite mythical character-St. Nicholas! At the rate that children are learning, parents won't be able to give a simple explanation regarding the truth about St. Nicholas. We'll have to scientifcally prove it.  You are now requested to find that one source that gives the analysis of Saint Nicholas. Please answer the following two questions and forward your responses to Dr. Morrison by email. Now, let's begin your search.

      #  How many miles would old Saint Nick have to travel to visit every child in the world?

      # How much time (remember time zones) would he have to complete his task?

Key Players in the Telecommunication's Industry

(4 points)

Deadline:  Sunday Midnight, March 12, 2000

____   Task #1 -   Select any 5 companies in the telecommunication's industry and
                                 exam their home page.  Using a 5-item criteria, evalute each home
                           page of that company from a competitor's standpoint.  Send you responses in a
                           creative form (including your critieria selected) to Dr. Morrison by midnight,
                           March 12, 2000.

_____ Task #2 -   From one of the readings listed on this website, read an article, etc.,
                           critically that  analyzes key issues in the telecommunication's industry.

 Venture Capitalists

    Cyberventure needs capital to begin operations.  Your task is to locate possible sources. You are to
complete the following 4 tasks.  They say you can find anything on the NET.  So, go to it and
let's get this important step behind us.  We need somewhere between $1m and $2m to
begin our new company.     Please indicate URL source with each response.
 

____Task #1 -  Identify at least 3 venture capitalist companies that specialize in funding small
                       new businesses.  Get their name, address,  telephone no., email address,
                       the funding process, and how much do they typically provide a new upstart.

____Task #2 - Identify at least one trade show or conference where a new business can go and
                      present her/his idea before a group of venture capitalists.   Get its name,
                      email address, telephone no. address, and application process.

____Task #3 - In terms of Cyberventure, how does a new company go about issuing stock
                      for the first time.  (Please indicate general procedure).

____Task #4 - Identify at least one commercial bank where we could obtain a loan of $1m
                      to begin our  business.  Find out what the interest rate would be and the cost
                      per month in payments per month over a 10-year period.

___ Task #1 -      You are to analyze the telecommunications consulting group
                          called Cognigen for the purpose of gaining insight as to what
                          Cybercom may look.  (This is the result of the business plan
                          you are to develop.)
                                  a.  Of all the 12 services provided by Cognigen, which 3 are most
                                       attractive to you and state why?
                                           b.  Describe in some detail the pricing structure of services in
                                       the areas of:  (1) Telephony (2) Satellite TV (3) Web Services.
                                       Give specific examples.  What is your view of their pricing
                                       structure?
                                           c.   Evaluate the Cognigen website in terms of the concept of 'particle
                                       marketing.'  Is this a good role model for Cybercom? Does this

Indicate at least 3 criteria that you felt were most significant in selecting the one WWW site over the other two. HINT: The theme of the project is - can you make MONEY on the NET? - This question was answered in a popular business journal on September 23, 1996. If you can locate that article, the questions indicated above can be easily answered.

      Providing Competitive Market Analysis Perspective

      Deadline:  Wednesday,  by class time,  April 26, 2000

      _____  Task # 1 -   Access the WEBSITE - http://www.cio.com/forums/ec/: Then,
       
                                    (a) Click on the article entitled - "Everything You Know About
                                    E-commerce is Wrong."  Read the entire article carefully and
                                    then send to Dr. Morrison 3 things you learned that apply
                                    to our project for developing a telecom company known as
                                    Cybercom.  Then:

                                    (b) Click on the EDI link in the left column of the same WEBsite
                                    as above in task #1. Look for Hyperlink to MOORE's LAW and
                                    read the article carefully.  Then send to Dr. Morrison  by email 3
                                    things you  learned that apply to the development of Cybercom.

      _____ Task #2 -     Using Netscape Composer, add the 2nd component to your
                                   company WEBPage for your division/issue.  This component is
                                   information to be placed in the WEBPage in regards to
                                   completing a market analysis (identifying trends and doing some
                                   forecasting).  This must be creative as well as informative for
                                   positioning Cybercom in the industry.  Use images, animation,
                                   or other graphics to increase reader impact.

                                   (a)  Attempt to link to at least 3 URLs in the industry for
                                          illustrating market trends in the industry.

      Deadline: All work must be saved on your disk and submitted to Dr. Morrison
                      by Wednesday,  April 26, 2000.  You should actually maintain 2
                      copies of the disk - one for submission and one for your use.

      you will be using Netscape again to gain access to a new kind of city,
      one that enables consumers to literally shop from their pcs.
      ___ Task #1 - Please access Virtual City.
      Please click on Virtual City and enter into the electronic world of a new kind of city life. Please scroll through 5 of the 11 alternatives included in the index of virtual city. Please send email to Dr. Morrison indicating the 5 items you previewed. Of the 5, please select the one that you feel was the BEST in terms of providing a useful service to a customer of virtual city. Justify why you thought that indexed service was of particular value to you as a resident of the city. Please in your email keep your message to Dr. Morrison to no more than 200 words.
      ___ Task #2 - Please gain access to TELECHOICE TELECOMMUNICATION service.
      Being a resident of Virtual City, you are searching for the kinds of telecommunications service being offered. Using the INDEX of Virtual City, select a search strategy for gaining information by clicking on several items and seeking the service options of the Virtual City's telecommunication's service called TELECHOICE. Once you access the service, read through the ENTIRE list of services and select any 2 that have particular appeal to you. Then place a note in your newgroup describing the two services you selected and justify your selection.
       
      ___ Task #3 - Access the Global Village.
      Please access the Global Village and maneuver yourself throughout the alternatives provided. Attempt to experiment with some of the services and goods available through your pc. You are seeking a position of employment in Global Village as a new resident. Search the INDEXES provided and obtain the titles and job description of at least 3 jobs that are presently available. Then place this information in your newsgroup using no more than 150 words. Then read the entries of your classmates and select ONE JOB indicated by your classmates and DIFFERENT from the 3 you previously identified that appears appropriate for you and send an email to Dr. Morrison what you have learned in this class makes you qualified for that job.       ____Task #1 - Put together a creative marketing strategy to promote either a specific
                            product or service -- or to address a specific issue that has been assigned
                            to your division of Cybercom.

    Question #3 - Shaw describes how the telecommunication's market is structured when illustrating the uniqueness of the  competitive nature of the marketplace.  Explain his view of the competitive nature of the telecommunication's market from (1) a macroeconomics and (2) a microeconomics point of view. In your response,  explain how the Business Opportunities Model illustrated by Shaw fits into these perspectives. (18 Points) (Between 100 and 300 words only, please)

Supplied will be the opening and closing price of a specific investment opportunity as well as answers to frequently asked questions regarding each investment strategy.

      You are allotted $20,000 to select a portfolio of stocks and mutual fund investments. You are to follow the specific guidelines to be provided to you. You can ONLY use the internet and the information dervived from a FREE investment service online. You remain a resident of Virtual City in this project. However, you are now part of the future and desire to make your investment quickly.Dtes for participation: April 1 - May 18

      ___Task #1 - You are to access the financial district of Virtual City and use networth to invest $10,000 in a mutual fund of your choice.
      You are to make your way from menu to menu to networth menu and access the mutual fund market manager. You will note information will be highlighted for gathering information needed to make an informed decision. You are to initially click on market outlook, meet the experts, fund atlas, and the forum for gathering data to frame your decision as to what mutual fund you are to invest. Then you are to make your way through NETWORTH and PRINT OUT ONE FORM - one or two page printout indicating the price you paid and a graph indicating the last 30 days of performance. Once this is accomplished, you are to email directly to Dr. Morrison the justification for your selection of this particular mutual fund. Please use no more than 150 words. Please note that on a separate piece of paper, please determine how many shares of the mutual fund you purchased and at what price and include this is your message to Dr. Morrison
