Problem-Based Learning:
From Ideas to Solutions through Communication

A Workshop Series for Faculty Members and Teaching Assistants

Friday afternoons, UD Campus, Spring 2006
1:30-4:30pm, Memorial Hall, Room 110

Goal: This workshop series is designed to help faculty members incorporate active learning into classrooms through an approach that assigns real, complex problems to teams of students. As they work through problems and present solutions, students engage in activities that promote critical thinking, research, teamwork, and good writing and speaking skills.
Who is welcome: Faculty and graduate teaching assistants from any discipline or department may participate. We seek a core of committed participants who will attend sessions regularly and commit to transforming their approach to a specific course.
Workshop format: The first half of each session will involve brief presentations of key elements of problem-based learning, with an emphasis on active learning and plenty of time for discussion. Participants will experience PBL themselves as they work through sample problems and exercises. During the second half, participants will work on plans and materials for integrating PBL into their own classrooms, with the goal of implementing their plans during Fall 2006 or Spring 2007. The class will make use of WebCT, stressing the ways that technology can support PBL.
UD faculty members will receive a stipend in two portions for participation that leads to curricular innovation. The charge to off-campus participants is $495.
