Tita was fifteen years old the day Pedro and his father came to the ranch to discuss marriage. She was trembling with excitement and nerves when she saw their carriage, and announced to her mother:
"Pedro Muzquiz wishes to speak with you. . . "
Mamá Elena replied:
"If this is concerning a request to marry you, he best not even think of it.  You know the tradition of this family - since you are the youngest of my daughters, you have the responsibility of caring for me until my death."
Tita, for the first time in her life, challenged Mamá Elena and remarked:
    "But I think. . . "
Mamá Elena interrupted her and shouted:
    "You think nothing!  Period!"

And so, as Tita's tears fell, Mamá Elena went out to greet Pedro and his father.
