Tita's life began in the kitchen
of her ranch. Her mother, Mamá Elena, gave birth to her on
the |
table. This is symbolic because, as you will
read later, the kitchen and all of its "powers" play an essential
role in the life of Tita.
When Tita was only two days
old, her father, Juan De la Garza, died of a heart attack. Her mother
is left in charge of the ranch and all of its responsibilities. But
Mamá Elena is a very strong woman and handles the jobs well.
She also has the help of two Native American women - Nacha, the cook, and
Chencha, the maid.
