COURSE HOMEPAGE: http://www.udel.edu/fllt/faculty/staceym/span200facetas.html

MATERIALS TO PURCHASE:

  • Facetas Textbook 3rd Ed. (Student Edition) w/ Supersite Plus Access (https://www.vhlcentral.com/)
  • Spanish-English/English-Spanish Dictionary
  • A three-tab folder with pockets and loose leaf paper to be used as a writing portfolio which will include your
    “Diario” entries.

EXPECTATIONS:

  • You will need to bring on a daily basis: textbook, dictionary, notebook and three-tab folder with pockets containing looseleaf paper. Failure to bring any of these materials on any given day will result in -1% per item on your homework and participation grade.
  • Please turn your cell phone off and store it during class. If you have an urgent situation for which you need to leave it on, please let me know before class. Students who do not honor this request will be marked absent and/or lose points from the participation grade. Plan to part with your devices during class.
  • Plan for access to a computer, the internet, and a printer with ink and paper, and to check your email daily before coming to class.  It is unlikely, but possible, that in the case of an emergency class will be canceled or moved, for example. Although rare, if this should occur, an email will be sent before class if at all possible.
  • Expect to participate in group discussions, partake in a variety of activities that appeal to different learner types, and to speak in Spanish only. Students who use English or don’t participate will lose points on their participation grade.
  • Homework assignments are due before class meets on the day assigned, including online homework. In other words, if a supersite assignment is listed as tarea for Monday, you need to complete it before class meets on Monday. Some of your homework will include writing in a Diario. For each homework assignment not completed or poorly completed, one percentage point will be deducted from your homework grade. This includes Diario entries that are due on a day when you are absent. Be sure to show me next class. Note: The Diario itself will be evaluated, but failure to bring diario entries are counted also as homework assignments missing.
  • There will be a cumulative Examen after every two Lecciones (chapters) that will integrate vocabulary, grammatical structures and writing.  The course material is cumulative, meaning material from chapter one will be tested on all three exams, and so on. It is essential to repeat assessment, and to continually practice base structures and vocabulary in order to successfully complete the course.
  • The writing skills focus of this course is the well-planned, grammatically-correct, fluid paragraph that captivates and holds attention. Students will be encouraged to use connectors, look up new and precise vocabulary, and avoid repetition and basic vocabulary such as muy, mucho, personas, cosas, interesante, importante, etc. Writing will take place in and out of class, some will be corrected using symbols to strengthen your ability to self-correct and form better habits. There will be one group presentation that will incorporate planning and composition skills while integrating and speaking.

Assessment will include Exams 45%, Writing 40%, and Effort (Homework, Preparation, Participation 15%. Below are the details:
