UD men’s lacrosse team defeats St. Joseph’s

9:19 a.m., Feb. 11, 2008--The No. 14-ranked University of Delaware men's lacrosse team opened the 2008 season with an 18-10 victory over host St. Joseph's University on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, who won the 2007 Colonial Athletic Association championship and advanced to the NCAA Division I national championship tournament semifinals, broke open a close game with six straight goals in the third and fourth quarters.

UD got goals from nine different players, with senior attack Vincent Giordano scoring five goals and sophomore Curtis Dickson scoring two goals and adding two assists.

Sophomore Martin Cahill posted his first career hat trick with three goals and added an assist, Kevin Kaminski and Beau Davis each scored twice, and Pat Lombard added a goal and two assists. Also scoring for the Hens were Cam Howard, Anthony Ruiz and J.J. Moran

Goalkeeper Tom Scherr had 10 saves and Ruiz, a redshirt freshman who has taken over faceoff duties for graduated two-time All-America selection Alex Smith, won 16 of his 26 faceoff attempts. Delaware outshot the Hawks 37-28 and committed just three turnovers.

The win gave UD Head Coach Bob Shillinglaw his 265th win in his 32nd season, the fourth highest win total of all active NCAA Division I head coaches.

The Blue Hens will return to action with a game Saturday, Feb. 16, against the University of Maryland Baltimore County at the Wounded Warrior benefit tournament in Neptune Beach, Fla. UD will play its home opener against Marist College at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23.
