New Hampshire edges Blue Hens in shootout

Omar Cuff scored four touchdowns in UD’s 52-49 loss to New Hampshire.

11:09 a.m., Oct. 2, 2006--The top-ranked University of New Hampshire football team edged the University of Delaware 52-49 in an Atlantic 10 Conference shootout on Saturday night at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium.

The Fightin' Blue Hens were unable to put the clamps on elusive New Hampshire quarterback Ricky Santos, a junior All-America who carried 13 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns and completed 21 of 30 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns. Highly touted wide receiver David Ball caught seven passes for 126 yards but no touchdowns, leaving him still one shy of the NCAA Division I-AA record. In all, New Hampshire piled up 516 yards of total offense.

The Hens were not far behind, either on the scoreboard or on offense, as quarterback Joe Flacco had a breakout game, completing 28 of 45 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns. Junior running back Omar Cuff carried 21 times for 109 yards and four touchdowns and also caught eight passes for 79 yards. Tight end Ben Patrick was the leading receiver, catching nine passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. Also catching touchdown passes for the Hens were wide receivers Aaron Love and Kervin Michaud. UD ended the game with 466 yards of total offense.

The entire game was back and forth and the fourth quarter was particularly wild, with the teams combining for six touchdowns, including four in the last five minutes.

“We just couldn't find a way to win this game tonight,” UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler, who entered the game 11-1 against top 10 opponents, said. “We are a program that doesn't accept moral victories but I told our kids that I'm proud of the way they played and they should be proud, too. They battled all night, and we grew up some today. Some guys took on bigger roles today, and I saw some positive things. It was frustrating to see how many tackles we missed but we have a lot of football left to play.”

With the loss, UD fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10. They will take to the road for a conference game at Northeastern University at noon Saturday.
