UD’s Haney is named CoSIDA All-Academic

UD’s Matt Haney has been named to the District 2 All-Academic team.

9:57 a.m., Nov. 22, 2006--University of Delaware senior defender Matt Haney has been named first team College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District 2 All-Academic for men's soccer.

Haney, a biological sciences major, was among 22 players selected to the first and second teams based on their academic and athletic accomplishments. To be eligible for the team, scholar-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.2 or higher and be a starter or key reserve for their team. District 2 includes all NCAA Division I schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

Haney earned District 2 first team honors as a sophomore in 2004 and as a junior in 2005. He is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America, earning first team honors in 2005 and third team honors in 2004.

Haney was named the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association scholar-athlete of the year for men's soccer and is a candidate again this season. He is also a four-time member of the CAA commissioner's academic honor roll.

A four-year starter and two-time team most valuable player at UD, Haney started 15 games this season and anchored a defense that posted three shutouts and allowed just 1.38 goals per game. During his career, Haney played in 70 games with 69 starts and scored four goals. He also served as a team co-captain in each of his final three seasons.
